| SAIA List of Unsuitable & Unsustainable Species v2 |

After a first round of review and discussion with encouraging participation, SAIA has revised its list to come up with version 2.
The document remains subject to discussion and public review.
From the input collected we plan to revise the list's format and include symbols for the criteria leading to the listing of a species. We also consider splitting the list into one for unsuitable and one for unsustainable species. Feedback we received was often related to misunderstanding, where users didn't read the foreword and/or reasons for listing stated in the respective fields and thus didn't understand that purpose of the list is neither to ban the listed species from trade nor this advice relates to every hobbyist. One concern was also that the list could be used by regulative bodies to force for trade bans. We would like to answer this concern by raising the question why our list especially should be what authorities were waiting for when the same/similar information has been published (online and publications) by various sources already before? The issue of unsuitable species is discussed in nearly every hobbyist bulletin board. And that is a good progress this hobby made. Regulate the trade yourself - that is what SAIA is all about. We would like to emphasize here again that the list is mainly an education tool for the average marine hobbyist with a reef/community tank. Thus trade shall not be banned, but rather demand to be reduced to those aquarists who have the expertise and requirements to keep the listed species successfully for the long-term and/or breed or research the species in question.
However many feedback we received was very positive and encourages us to continue this discussion and project.
Rachel Jones, Aquarium, ZSL London Zoo: "This is a welcome initiative and I commend SAIA on making progress with it."
